Kirkland City Council Passes Section 8 Ordinance

On Tuesday night, the Kirkland City Council passed an ordinance ensuring that prospective tenants will not be denied housing solely based upon the use of a Section 8 voucher. The 4-3 vote was preceded by an exceptionally large number of audience members expressing their opinions on the issue. Some proponents of the measure referred to it as protection against income discrimination. One audience member borrowed and modified the words of Rev. Martin Luther King when she said that people should be judged by the content of their character, rather than the level of their income. Most speakers opposed to the ordinance referred to the impact of mandated government inspections, paperwork and requirements and some predicted a decrease in available housing units as a result of this measure.
