Celebrate Kids! (formerly Gifts 4 Kids) provides a festive holiday experience for children of prisoners, and the event needs donations of toys and money.
Celebrate Kids! was started by former inmate Vance Bartley in 2008, as a way to help the children of inmates, and to give back to the community he harmed. Many of these kids live in disadvantaged economic circumstances and are at high risk for future incarceration.
Now in its fourth year, Celebrate Kids! brings together children who share something in common: a parent in prison. About 300 kids aged 1-13 attend this event, plus their caregivers. The event is run entirely by volunteers.
Activity rooms include face painting and balloon art plus a play room, carnival room, barber shop for haircuts and braiding, arts and crafts room, toy room, and a clothing room. The event is sponsored by The Post-Prison Education Program and is held on December 10 at Rainier Beach High School in Seattle.
This year they need to raise about $5000. They also need toys and clothing, and can accept used items that are in good condition. They especially need toys and gifts for 10-13 year old girls and boys. 100% of the money goes to the event – there are no paid organizers.
