Women's Soccer LW vs Mercer Island
The Lake Washington High School girls’ soccer team was determined to keep their winning streak alive and was not going to let Mercer Island stand in their way when they squared off at Mac Field on Thursday night. The Kangs, having narrowly defeated the Islanders in their previous meeting, knew they would have their job cut out for them. LW came out strong and earned several corners within the first few minutes. In the fourth minute, Jessie Zogg sent a corner into the box where awaiting Cassie Lively drove a header which grazed the crossbar and sailed out. The tough Kang back line of Callie Weber, Jessie Zogg, Kennedy Nicholson, and Amy Johnson kept the team focused on attacking and displayed their best passing of the season. Midfielders Emma Holm, Sara Crauer, Kaiti Brixey, Sarah Wyrick, and Cassie Lively distributed the ball well with a quick pace and great use of the field, frequently switching up the play. At seventeen minutes in, the Kangs scored what the game announcer accurately described as, “a goal by committee.” LW’s Amy Johnson stole the ball and laid it off to Cassie Lively who sent it outside to Shelby Bergren. Bergren dribbled from the twenty to the five before crossing the ball to advancing Emma Holm. Holm switched the ball to her left foot and fired a line drive which ricocheted off the Islander keeper to Emily Bunnell, who together with Shelby Bergren, sent the ball back in for the first goal. The Kangs continued to press hard and hold tight, and credit freshman goalkeeper Maeve O’Connor with a beautiful save in the 36th minute. They went into the second half leading 1-0.
Mercer Island continued to fight hard, including a dangerous free kick by Nicole Ihlenfeldt. Kang forwards Shelby Bergren, Emily Bunnell, Chloe Clowers, and Emily Robinson continued to make runs and take shots. Never letting down, the team in white continued to work together to hold off the Islanders. Then, with less than two minutes remaining on the clock, LW’s Emma Holm intercepted a MI throw-in by directing a long header up the line to Emily Bunnell who headed the ball laterally to a striding Emily Robinson. With determination and finesse, Robinson pulled one step ahead of her defender and placed a roller just beyond the reach of the outstretched Islander keeper and the ball found the net inches behind the far post to secure the 2-0 Kang victory. Kang keeper Maeve O’Connor earned the shutout for the evening.
