Fines Will Be Issued Beginning March 3rd At All Redmond Traffic Safety Camera Locations

Just one last reminder… fines will be issued beginning March 3rd at all Redmond traffic safety camera locations listed below.  If you were the lucky recipient of a warning ticket over the last few weeks, you should have received a letter with still photos of the situation.  Beginning tomorrow, notice of infractions will include a unique PIN that will allow the person receiving the citation to view video footage online.

That said, the two most common questions we have received are below, copied straight from the Frequently Asked Questions page of the city’s Safety Light Camera website:

Why does the camera flash when no one actually runs the red light?

On occasion, a vehicle approaching an intersection with a red light may come to a stop before entering the intersection, yet still trigger the red light camera system, causing the flash to discharge.

There are sensors set back from the first line of the crosswalk or intersection. The threshold for the sensors is set at 12 mph for right turn lanes and 10 mph for straight-aways. When the camera senses that the vehicle will not have time to stop based on these threshold speeds, it snaps a photograph.

It is important to remember that just because a camera flashes doesn’t automatically mean there was a violation. The review process of each alleged violation goes through several steps before a decision is made. The final decision rests with Redmond Police and is based on the still pictures and video.

I may have been photographed by a camera; can I call to verify whether or not I will be receiving a notice of infraction?

No. As mentioned above, there are several steps in the review process. If you are found to be in violation of running the red light or speeding in a school zone at the locations that have cameras, then you will receive a notice in the mail and have plenty of time to weigh your options and decide how to resolve the citation. It is important to remember that just because a camera flashes doesn’t automatically mean there was a violation.
