One of the region's best chefs opens her second restaurant next door to Lynn's Bistro
Eastside foodies are well familiar with Lynn's Bistro, the intimate 36 seat restaurant serving a distinctive commingling of Asian and French cuisine in downtown Kirkland since 2001. Now Chef Lynn Tran has opened Lilac Cafe next door at 212 Central Way.
The new family style restaurant is more casual than Lynn's Bistro yet maintains the same high standards in the kitchen and the two restaurants even share a few customer-favorites, served with a twist. For example, fans of Lynn's Dungeness Crab Cakes will be pleased to discover that Lilac Cafe serves them in the form of a slider between two brioche buns... delicious.
For the happy hour crowd, Lilac Cafe serves an early happy hour daily from 4 - 6 pm and will soon be offering a late night happy hour as well, both with food and beverage specials.
Lilac Cafe offers their entire menu throughout the house including in what has to be in the competition for the smallest bar in the state: a four-seat area with barstools. The bar is well stocked but make no mistake, the focus at Lilac Cafe is clearly on the food and the drinks are a compliment to menu items.
But fear not, minglers of bars. Lilac Cafe is a welcoming space without the often forced delineation of restaurant and bar seen in so many establishments.
During two recent visits, we sampled the salmon served with arugula and toasted almond pesto, the polenta fries and the previously mentioned Dungeness crab sliders, all of which we found to be wonderful in their preparation and presentation. Next time we visit we will pretend to be land lubbers and tackle the pork belly and the braised lamb shank we spotted on the menu.
We congratulate Lynn on her new venture and we welcome Lilac Cafe to town. Come join us there. If you don't spot us sitting at the bar, you'll find us nearby exploring the menu in this casual, comfortable cafe. We'll see you there!
