Citizen Rescuers Save Paddleboarder with CPR

Quick action by youths help to save paddle boarder on Lake Washington in Kirkland

At 4 p.m. on July 7, 2014 bystanders near Kirkland’s Settler’s Landing Park noticed a male on a paddleboard heading south along the shore.  A short time later the bystanders noticed the male in the water floating near the paddleboard about 50 yards off of the private dock.  Suspecting the paddle boarder was in trouble, three high school-age youth swam to the paddle boarder and brought him to the private side of the dock by the Park, called 9-1-1, and initiated CPR until the Kirkland Fire Department arrived.  Kirkland Aid Unit 22 arrived within four minutes of the 9-1-1 call.  The victim regained a pulse as he was transported to the hospital.  The witnesses were on the City-owned dock at Settler’s Landing.  King County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol and Bellevue Medic 1 responded to the incident.   The victim is only being identified as a 54 year old male.
