Kirkland Green Trip offers rewards for sustainable traveling

Kirkland commuters are encouraged to take the next step in choosing sustainable commuting options with the newly expanded rideshare and incentive program, Kirkland Green Trip (KGT). Those who register for the free program may be eligible for $50 in gift cards by taking the Make A Change Pledge.

The Make A Change Pledge is a regional effort encouraging people to change two days of driving alone per week to traveling by bus, carpool, vanpool, bike, walking, teleworking and working an alternative work schedule. Drivers are encouraged to integrate a sustainable mode of transportation into their weekly routines. The Make A Change Pledge is available on Once registered, participants take a brief survey including the pledge to change drive-alone trips to more sustainable trips. Rewards are distributed online upon completing the pledge.

“We aren’t asking people to change their lifestyle altogether,” says Kirkland Green Trip program manager Augusta DeVries. “We are asking them to think about how they can make incremental commute choices that can become a part of a regional solution.”

KGT grew from a 2011 program available to Totem Lake employees and residents, and now offers incentives to residents and employees city-wide who choose a way to travel other than driving alone. KGT participants can be eligible for even more rewards through King County Metro, as well as other cities that they may frequent. KGT is funded by the City of Kirkland and is managed by the TransManage, a Transportation Management Association based in Bellevue.
