Nettleton Mansion/Green’s Funeral Home — Originally 400 State St. (Today it looks more like it is located at 500 State St, but it is on wheels so no telling how long until it moseys on down the road.)
Originally built in 1914 for Clark Nettleton, then-publisher of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
“It was bought by the Bleitz family for a funeral home in 1931. Chester and Agnes Green bought the funeral home in 1936; the family continued to operate it until 1996 when it was sold to the Alderwoods Group. That company closed the funeral parlor in January 2005.” – Quoted from an excellent 2005 Seattle Times article titled, “A walk through history”
The property has since been purchased by CamWest Development which is clearing the site now. Their sign says, “25 New Homes. Coming in early 2009.”

Came across this picture. I am researching the Nettletons District of the Historic Spokane Area. My great great grandfathers mother Ruth A. Nettleton, sister to William Nettleton (of the historic Nettleton District in Spokane), son and daughter of Joshua Nettleton of Ashtabula, married Joseph McAdams whom is my GGG Grandfather. Was interesting to see the picture. McAdams and Nettletons perservered across the plains to Spokane, and left the marks from Ashtabula Ohio, to Spokane Washington across the long frontier West in many areas along the way. Clark Nettleton was part of that family.

The house has been moved only slightly, to the southern edge of the same block. It looks like it will front on 5th Ave South. CamWest is going to rehab it and sell it as a single family residence.
The funeral home chapel which used to adjoin the house was given to the Northlake Unitarian Universalist Church, who had it moved north across 4th Ave South to their property. They raised it up, built a new lower level beneath it, and are in the final stages of restoring the original structure for church use. The lower level will be a daycare center, and they plan to open soon.
