Kirkland community invited to Public Safety Building project update at Jan. 31 meeting

 Since City of Kirkland officials conducted door-to-door outreach and held a community meeting last summer on the Public Safety Building, design of the future home of the Kirkland Police Department and Kirkland Municipal Court has continued.  The City and its design consultants are hosting an informational meeting on Jan. 31, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. to provide updates on the building design, permitting process, and to answer questions.  The meeting will be held at the current Kirkland Municipal Court, 11515 NE 118th Street. Police, jail, and court services will co-locate in the Public Safety Building, located at 11831 120th Ave. NE, allowing for better coordination of services at a geographical center of the City.  The building eliminates the need for the transportation of misdemeanor inmates, provides on-site parking for Court clients thus reducing on-street parking on NE 118th St. and provides for cost savings by retrofitting an existing building rather than constructing a new one.  The building is designed to support more than 130 Police and 20 Court personnel and to include a 55-bed jail with a “rough out” of up to 30 additional beds.  The building will also include a meeting room that will be available for public use.  A firearms proficiency range may be bid separately depending on cost and available funding and would be acoustically designed to minimize noise impact to building occupants and surrounding properties.
