Houghton Community Council Survives Another Round at State Legislaure

Supporters of the Houghton Community Council have sent out this letter noting that a committee has recommended that the state legislature take no action this session regarding Community Municipal Corporations such as the Houghton Community Council (HCC).

Those opposed to the continuation of the HCC have attempted multiple times to pass legislation altering the charter under which it was formed. To date, HCC advocates have been successful in thwarting such attempts.

UPDATE ON PRESERVATION OF THE HOUGHTON COMMUNITY COUNCIL:

Congratulations to all on a job well done! On Tuesday, December 11th, the State Joint Committee on Junior Taxing Districts and Municipal Corporations met to develop recommendations for the legislature. In the meeting lots of things were discussed, but the committee made a very firm statement in recommending through not just discussion, but a vote, that NO action is taken regarding Community Municipal Corporations (like the Houghton Community Council).

The calls and emails definitely had an impact, as several of the committee members discussed receiving them. And they passed on information that was very important for them to consider in making this decision.

PS: Please remember that 2013 will be a Houghton Community Council election year. :)
