Welcome Deru Market! Local, organic, gourmet takeaway... where have you been all these years?

[scrollGallery id=203] If you love food like we do, you will appreciate Deru Market, a new artisan market tucked away in a nondescript building just north of downtown Kirkland. Deru Market has been open since July, featuring local, organic gourmet dishes for takeaway. The place is so small that there is no room for chairs, but don't let that dissuade you from visiting. The space they do have sas been put to good use as evidenced by their menu offerings and the photos above. Wood fired pizzas, fresh salads, focaccia sandwiches are but a few of the items you will find on the menu which changes daily (visit www.derumarket.com for the latest).

For proprietors Jordan and Jamie (pictured above), who opened the catering kitchen and artisan market, takeaway meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner were not an after thought. Much attention has been put into making Deru Market a warm, cozy and inviting atmosphere. A peek into the kitchen reveals a large brick pizza oven and an entire catering kitchen facility. Order an espresso and relax while you watch your order made fresh before your eyes.

On our first visit, Kate and I shared a chicken pesto pizza with summer basil pesto, goat cheese, local free range chicken and marinated tomatoes. We also shared a chicken focaccia sandwich and an enormous chocolate cookie called a "chocolate chubby". The menu changes daily and after checking their homepage just now, I see that I will be heading there for lunch to try something new: a garbanzo bean salad with roasted red peppers, arugula, red onion, dill and a cumin lime vinaigrette. Please note: For those who know me, such a dish is not something I would ordinarily find myself ordering. But when I find a place this good, I have to test the whole menu. So far, Deru is our neighborhood's best new addition.

Deru Market really brings to Kirkland a new twist to takeaway food and is providing a caliber for which many have long pined. It is well worth your trip into the light industrial portion of the Norkirk neighborhood, a mere nine blocks north of downtown (situated across the street from the City of Kirkland Maintenance Center).

Visit Deru. It is hands down the best takeaway in town. You'll be glad you did.
