Three Route Alternatives for PSE's Sammamish-Juanita Transmission Line Project

After months of discussion, a project stakeholder advisory group and Puget Sound Energy have identified three route alternatives for the Sammamish-Juanita 115 kilovolt (kV) transmission line project. The proposed route alternatives are available at www.PSE.com/SammJuan115.

A computer routing model was used to develop routes for discussion. The model considers avoidance areas, such as single family residential areas and steep slopes, as well as opportunity areas, such as PSE-owned rights of way, to develop an output route for discussion.

Working through two meetings, the advisory group reviewed 30 model outputs and narrowed the field to three alternatives for further consideration, designated Alternative 1, Alternative 2 and Alternative 3 (download map PFD). The advisory group recommended PSE staff explore some modifications to Alternative 1 to avoid a school and to use commercial areas.

The next step in the process is for PSE staff to further study the three route alternatives, as well as the two recommended modifications to Alternative 1, for constructability and feasibility and make any necessary refinements to the proposed alternatives. Once it is determined that these three route alternatives are constructible, they will be presented to the public at two community meetings tentatively scheduled in April 2012.

Following the April community meetings, the advisory group will meet with PSE staff to develop a preferred route; the route will be shared with community members and their feedback will be invited. The goal is to make a final routing decision by this summer, allowing the project to move into the design and permitting phase. The project is expected to be in service by 2013.

The Sammamish-Juanita 115 kV project is designed to increase dependability of the existing electric system serving the northern Redmond-Kirkland area. PSE plans to construct approximately four miles of 115 kV transmission line from the Sammamish Substation (9221 Willows Road NE in Redmond) to or near the existing Juanita Substation (10910 NE 132nd Street in Kirkland).
