Kirkland Couple Receives SPU Medallion Award

The Downs family has been a force in Christian education in the Seattle area for more than 20 years. Bellevue Christian School (BCS) has been like an extended family to them. Janice, a 1979 graduate of SPU, passed away in 2010. She job-shared teaching duties with her husband in various grades over the years as the four Downs kids gained their K-12 education at BCS. The devoted pair has always been held in highest regard by the BCS community.

Mike, a 1977 graduate of SPU, has been head coach at BCS for 31 years, including 25 years as a sixth grade teacher. In his years of coaching, his teams have been to the state tournament the last 10 years in a row, winning twice in back-to-back years in 2005 and 2006. In his years of coaching, he also coached his three sons before they went on to become SPU Falcons.

Mike has been named “Coach of the Year” several times, and “Seattle Times Area Coach” and “Sportsmanship Award” in 2008. Last year, he was in the “Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.”
