Kangs Win in Playoffs with a Golden Goal, 1-0

Lake Washington vs. Mercer Island Monday, October 31

The Lake Washington High School girls’ soccer team faced off against the Mercer Island Islanders on Tuesday night at home in the KingCo 3A soccer tournament.  The Kangs had 19 shots in the game but the Mercer Island goalkeeper Corey Goelz had 11 saves in a truly outstanding performance.

Despite consistent offensive pressure it wasn’t until the second overtime period that LW could finally get a score.  The Kangs had come out strong in the first overtime period but, like during regulation play, could not finish.  Two minutes into the second overtime period senior defender Jessie Zogg took a corner kick.  As the ball sailed to the goalmouth, freshman forward Emily Bunnell leaped and headed the ball into the net for the dramatic walk-off win.

Earlier in the evening in the other KingCo playoff game, the Bellevue Wolverines beat the Mt. Si Wildcats in overtime, 3-2.  That victory sends Bellevue to play off against Lake Washington on Wednesday at LW at 7:00 p.m.  The winner of that match-up will compete in the KingCo-Metro Pigtail Game on Saturday, November 5th.  The Pigtail playoff will pit a Metro League team against a KingCo League team, with the victor entering the girls’ State 3A soccer tournament which begins on Tuesday, November 7th.

The Kangs are coached by Head Coach Suzanne Hart and Assistant Coaches Suzanne Soine, Stacy Masters, and Brad Masters.  The Lake Washington High School Principal is Christina Thomas and the Athletic Director is George Crowder.
