LWHS Seniors top Bellevue 1-0 in Women's Soccer

Lake Washington Seniors Prevail over Bellevue on Senior Night

The tribute to the six seniors from the Lake Washington girls’ soccer team Thursday night turned out to be a display of talent.  The team honored their graduating teammates before the game for their dedication, leadership, and friendship.  They didn’t realize that the seniors had a plan of their own – to steal the evening.

The game began with a bang.  In the first minute, senior center-midfielder Emma Holm, demonstrating outstanding ball control, was playing the ball across from the middle when she was fouled near the sideline at about the forty-five yard line.  The job of taking the awarded free kick belonged to senior center-back defender Jessie Zogg.  The Bellevue defense lined up believing the shot to be out of Zogg’s range but she proved them wrong.  Jessie sailed a high, lofted ball to the goal line where it bounced and skipped past the Bellevue keeper’s reach for a Kang score.

Bellevue fought back but their efforts were denied by talented Kang senior goalkeeper Jayme Dailey who directed the defense and earned a shutout for the evening.  LW pressured on several occasions and senior forward Chloe Clowers powered the offense with crisp passes and shots.  Senior outside-midfielder Cassie Lively had numerous dangerous corner kicks, brilliant throw-ins, and penetrating drives as the Kangs ended the first half ahead by one.

Lake Washington came out strong again in the second half and the Bellevue attackers were turned back by the solid defense of senior left-back Kennedy Nicholson. Nicholson intercepted BHS passes and redirected the LW offense with key headers and well-served lead passes to attackers up front.  Senior Emma Holm distributed from the middle and led the offense with three shots on goal; one sharply-driven header sailed just inches over the bar.

The final score was 1-0 in favor of the Kangs who are coached by Head Coach Suzanne Hart and Assistant Coach Suzanne Soine.  The team finishes up the regular season next week with games at Sammamish on Tuesday and at Juanita on Thursday night.
