Lake Washington Battles Mt. Si to 1-1 Tie in Double Overtime

The Lake Washington High School girls’ soccer team came out strong against the Mt. Si High School Wildcats on Thursday, October 13th in North Bend. Their first possession resulted in a corner but unfortunately, the Kangs could not capitalize. Three minutes later LW speedster Shelby Bergren beat the Mt. Si defense and fired a powerful shot which was saved by Mt. Si goalkeeper Sophia Rockow.

In the eighth minute Mt. Si’s Miranda Rawlings served up a beautiful corner which was headed in by Leah Corra for a Wildcat goal. The Kangs fought back as a long free kick by Jessie Zogg was blocked out for a corner. Cassie Lively placed the corner in the box but Emily’s Bunnell’s header veered wide of the goal. LW continued to attack as Sarah Wyrick passed to Jessica Scovel who dropped the ball back to Ally McKinney. McKinney, who had just returned to the lineup from an early season injury, fired a shot which was just wide. As the half wound down Kang Keeper Maeve O’Connor made a magnificent save on a shot drilled by Wildcat Claire Larsen as the Kangs went into halftime down by one.

Coaches Suzanne Hart and Suzanne Soine sent the team out of the field determined to fight back. Three minutes into the half Kang defender Amy Johnson took a free kick from almost the sideline and drilled a rising line drive just over a leaping Rockow’s gloves for the tying score. The play continued back and forth as Kang Emily Robinson pressured the Wildcat defense. Sara Crauer distributed the ball to Emma Holm who worked the ball in but the shot by Chloe Clowers just missed as regulation time ran out.

The first overtime period featured great defense by Kangs Kennedy Nicholson, Callie Weber, and Kaiti Brixey. A Mt. Si foul on a sprinting Shelby Bergren resulted in a free kick but the Kangs could not get a score. The second overtime was a battle as Wildcat Cosgrove’s menacing shot was stopped by the Kang’s O’Connor and the game ended in 1-1 tie. Lake Washington looks forward to facing the league leaders Liberty on Tuesday in Issaquah.
