Many school districts encourage their graduating seniors to attend the all night senior party. Senior parties were established to help protect young lives on one of the most dangerous nights of the year: graduation night.
But DID YOU KNOW that the Lake Washington School District was the first? In 1954, Lake Washington High School organized its first all night party. Just like today, parents chaperoned. The Senior Party was such a success that Life Magazine was there in 1955 to record the second party. Three pages were dedicated in the June 27, 1955 Life issue.
Thanks to eBay and antique shops, Kirkland Heritage Society has two of these issues. One is being signed by as many 1955 graduates as possible.
Kirkland has always been thought of as a sleepy little town. Little yes, but sleepy, no. Kirkland, Houghton and Juanita have always been full of wonderful ideas and “firsts”. Congratulations to all 2011 seniors. Stay safe.
