N.E. Points Drive Traffic Impacts, Detours, and Tree Removal to Begin May 31, 2011
Construction work as part of the SR 520 Eastside Transit and HOV Project will soon have major impacts on traffic along N.E. Points Drive in Kirkland. Over the next two years large sections of the roadway will be closed and traffic detoured for weeks at a time as Eastside Corridor Constructors (ECC) installs large culverts, works on utilities and constructs retaining walls.
During the weekend of June 17-20, SR 520 will be closed in both directions between Montlake and I-405. At the same time, N.E. Points Drive will be reduced to one lane for culvert installation. Traffic will be controlled by flaggers to allow vehicles to pass during the restriction.
Beginning the week of June 20, N.E. Points Drive will be completely closed until late August for utility and culvert work. The closure will be at the east end of the street, between the Plaza Yarrow Bay office complex and 101st Way. Access to Plaza Yarrow Bay will be maintained to and from Bellevue Way.
While N.E. Points Drive is closed traffic barricades currently in place at the west end of the street will be removed and all traffic from 101st Way N.E., 100th Lane N.E. and 96th Avenue N.E. will exit and enter the neighborhood to and from the west using 92nd Avenue N.E. Once the culvert and utility work has been completed in late August the traffic barricades will be replaced and N.E. Points Drive traffic will once again enter and exit the area as it does today.
In the early spring of 2012, N.E. Points Drive will again be closed for about two months between 96th Avenue and 100th Lane N.E. for retaining wall and roadway construction. During this closure, all traffic on 96th Avenue N.E. will again use Points Drive N.E. and 92nd Avenue N.E. to enter and exit the neighborhood. All traffic east of 96th Avenue N.E. will have access to Bellevue Way as it does now.
In late May, 2012, daytime traffic between 96th Avenue N.E. and 101 Way N.E. will be restricted to one lane for about three months for retaining wall construction. Flaggers will allow vehicles to pass in one direction at a time from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
To make room for all these changes to SR 520 and N.E. Points Drive a large number of trees in WSDOT right-of-way along both roadways will be removed. Within the next two weeks tree and brush clearing will begin on N.E Points Drive. New landscaping is currently under design and will be installed at the end of the project.
In addition to the traffic restrictions local residents should also expect the usual impacts of large scale construction. Noise, dust and lights during work at night will be occasional inconveniences as the project goes forward.
