Volunteers Needed | Join an Optimist Club in Kirkland

We are in the process of forming an Optimist Club in Kirkland and we invite you to be a part of it.

In this age of budget cutbacks in schools and social services, it is more important than ever that we as a community step up to help youth make good choices in their lives. Optimist Clubs provide an opportunity to bring people together to work with our youth and empower them to be successful, responsible members of the community. Our Motto is "Bringing out the Best in Kids".

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 17 at 6pm at the Coast to Coast Driving School, 12305 120th Ave NE, Suite G in Kirkland.

Our guest speaker will be Nanci Wehr, co-founder of the LINKS volunteer program. LINKS (Looking into the Needs of Kids and Schools) was adopted as a pilot program in 2008 to serve students in Lake Washington School District. The LINKS program matches volunteers with schools where they share their time and talent to help students succeed. Volunteers provide adcademic and social support during the school day and in after school study programs, giving students the added one-on-one support they need to be successful.

Nanci has been passionate about working with kids for years. She's excited to continue spreading the word about LINKS. For more information about LINKS, go to www.lwsd.org\links.

The Optimist Club is looking for volunteers to join:

We are in the process of forming an Optimist Club in Kirkland and we invite you to be a part of it. Optimist International is the fourth largest service club in the world. (www.optimist.org) Its motto is "Bringing Out the Best in Kids". We have clubs in 25 countries throughout the world, where approximately 3,400 Clubs and more than 100,000 members make the organization which serves more than six million children worldwide.

Each Club develops projects to meet the needs of their individual community. Three reasons we are a successful service club:

1. 95% of the projects each Club completes directly involve children in thier community.

2. All the money raised by the Club stays in the community.

3. We believe in optimism as a philosophy of life. (See Optimist Creed below.)

There will be an informational meetings on Tuesday, May 10 and Tuesday, May 17 at 6pm at the Coast to Coast Driving school. 12305 120th Ave. NE, Suite G, Kirkland. The purpose is to explain our organization, answer questions and share ideas about how the Kirkland Optimist Club will support the youth in Kirkland and the Eastside. We hope you will attend, If you have any questions, please e-mail or call Ed Murphy. (see below)

We would greatly appreciate it if you would share this invitation with any other members of your staff, family or friends who might have an interest in this worthwhile opportunity.

The Optimist Creed

Promise Yourself --

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

Yours in Optimism,

Ed Murphy, Pacific NW District Governor
