Labor Union Pickets Bank of America in Downtown Kirkland (Photos + Video)

[imagebrowser id=118] A group of about 20 union carpenters from the Tacoma-based Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters picketed on the corner of Kirkland Avenue and Lake Street South Thursday morning. The protest was against Heiberg Inc, a contractor for new Bank of America branch which is under construction at that location. The reason for picketing? Protestors claim Heiberg does not pay "the area standard."

When asked if the picketing was because Heiberg was employing non-union workers, the claim was flatly denied by a protestor. When pressed on the issue, the protestor said, "This is not union vs. non-union. This is about them not paying the area standard."

What, you might ask, is considered "the area standard?"

The area standard is approximately $46 per hour, according to Jose Juarez of the carpenter's union.
