Kirkland Transit Center Construction Update

The following construction update is from Sound Transit:

Night work needed

Beginning the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 7, Sound Transit’s contractor will be installing underground electrical conduits at the intersection of Central Way & 3rd Street. To minimize traffic impacts, this work will be at night, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The work will take from one to three nights to complete.

The conduit work, which includes sawcutting the road surface, will create some noise. The City of Kirkland has granted a variance from the nighttime noise ordinance.

Central Way will be reduced to one lane in each direction, and after midnight, 3rd Street may be closed to all traffic for a few hours.

New sidewalks at 3rd Street intersections

Beginning late this month and lasting up to two weeks, crosswalks across Central Way and Kirkland Avenue are scheduled to be closed to allow for construction of a new continuous sidewalk on the east side of 3rd Street between Central Way and Kirkland Avenue.

During this work, pedestrians should be cautious and follow the detour signs to safe crossing locations.

3rd Street travel lane to move

During the second week of October, the northbound vehicle lane on 3rd Street is scheduled to switch to the east side of the street. By that time, the east half of 3rd Street will have all-new concrete pavement and all-new concrete sidewalk.

At that time, the sidewalk on the west side of 3rd Street will be closed for reconstruction, and all north-south pedestrian traffic will be routed to the east side of the street.

The Kirkland Transit Center is scheduled for completion in January 2011. Bus service will be restored to the transit center soon thereafter.
