The Lake Washington United Methodist Church is holding a Neighborhood Information Meeting on Tent City on March 30th at 7:oo p.m. The meeting will be hosted at Lake Washington UMC in Kirkland (Note: this meeting was previously scheduled for March 23rd).
Tent City 4 is an organized and regulated homeless encampment. The church has applied for a permit to host the camp from April 24 to July 24. The church last hosted Tent City 4 from May to August 2005. Residents of Tent City, representatives of the City of Kirkland, and church members will be present at the meeting. If you have questions or concerns, or you would like to help, please come to the meeting in our chapel at 7525 132nd Ave NE, Kirkland.
As our United Methodist social principles direct us, we are committed 'to support the basic rights of all persons to equal access to housing, education, employment, medical care, legal redress for grievances and physical protection.' Tent City has accepted our offer to host them again at LWUMC from April 24th to July 17th. It has been 4 1/2 years since they stayed with us.
On Tuesday, March 30 at 7 pm, we will have an informational meeting for our neighbors to explain how Tent City operates. At that time we will have representatives from the Church and Tent City 4, and they will be happy to answer your questions.
In addition to previously hosting Tent City 4, our congregation has provided a monthly Saturday evening meal, and gathered and donated towels, winter coats, blankets, socks, tents, flashlights, and batteries. We have welcomed them in worship with us and said farewell as they got on their feet and moved on with their lives.
We invite you to join with us in supporting this ministry to the homeless on the Eastside.
