A comical farce with sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, gallant young lovers, and an eccentric Major-General await you in Gilbert & Sullivan's light-hearted musical masterpiece The Pirates of Penzance, playing March 17 – 26, 2016 at the Juanita High School Theatre.
The Pirates of Penzance, a comic operetta, is the tale of Frederic who has been indentured to a band of pirates until his 21st birthday. Frederic's hard-of-hearing nursemaid was supposed to apprentice the youth to a ship's PILOT, not PIRATE, but alas a mistake was made. Upon his release Frederick meets and instantly falls in love with Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley. Frederic’s birthday, however, falls on the 29th of February and he learns that he was born in a leap year, so technically he has but one birthday every four years and is bound to remain a pirate for yet another 63 years! The faithful Mabel agrees to wait for his return. The gentlemanly pirates to whom Frederic is apprenticed were all orphans and are unwilling to plunder and pillage any fellow orphans. The Major-General falsely claims that he is an orphan thus pitting Frederick and the pirates against the father of the woman he loves. Madcap antics fill the show with Frederic's misplaced sense of duty, a police force that resembles the keystone cops, preposterous logic that somehow makes sense, and of course loyalty and love winning in the end. All of this ‘happily resides in the immediate vicinity’ onstage with Juanita Rebel Drama!
