The road connecting Kingsgate’s business district to 132nd Avenue Northeast will be a lot smoother by early August. For the next few weeks, however, it’ll be a little rough and slow. That’s because on Monday Kirkland’s contractor, Watson Asphalt, begins repaving Northeast 144th and 143rd streets, from 124th to 132nd Avenue Northeast.

The process begins with ‘lowering iron’—removing manhole covers to protect them from the pre-surfacing asphalt grinding, which removes the old pavement’s top three inches.
The 144th & 143rd arterial is one of seven street sections Kirkland’s contractor is repaving this construction season.

Watson will finish the first of those this week: Northeast 60th Street, from 132nd Avenue to the west side of Ben Franklin Elementary School.

After Kirkland’s paving contractor finishes Northeast 144th and 143rd streets at the end of July or early August, it will pave Finn Hill’s Northeast 141st Street, from Juanita Drive to 84th Avenue Northeast.

Watson will also pave Seventh Avenue South this summer, as well as portions of 116th, 124th and 132nd Avenues Northeast.

Meanwhile, concrete crews are currently preparing these streets for their new surfaces by improving wheelchair access to their curb ramps together with other concrete fixes.
