Kirkland Police Department investigates early morning fatal collision

High speed a factor in driver’s death

On Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at approximately 2 a.m., Kirkland Police Department (KPD) dispatch received several 9-1-1 calls reporting that a vehicle collision occurred in the parking lot of the Montebello Apartments, 12000 block of 132nd Avenue NE.  Callers reported that a full size pickup truck collided with several parked vehicles, causing an extensive amount of damage, then flipped onto the passenger side of the truck.  Kirkland Police and Kirkland Fire and Medic units arrived and located one person involved in the collision.  The driver of the truck was pronounced deceased at the scene by Fire and Medic personnel.   None of the other damaged vehicles were occupied and no other injuries were reported.

KPD’s Traffic Investigation Unit responded and is in charge of this investigation. A total of four parked vehicles were extensively damaged along with several other structures in the apartment complex parking lot.  It was clear to investigators with the amount of damage they observed, that extreme high speed was a major factor in this collision.  The King County Medical Examiner’s (M.E.) Office responded and removed the deceased for its investigation.  Once the M.E.’s Office completes its autopsy and toxicology screening, investigators will know if alcohol and/or drugs were also a factor in this crash.  KPD is withholding release of the deceased information pending family notification by the King County M.E. Office.
