Hundreds attend the Kirkland Polar Bear Plunge [photos]

Under sunny skies and 40 degree F temperatures, hundreds ascended upon Kirkland's Marina Park to partake in the 13th Annual Unofficial Polar Bear Plunge. The shoreline was filled with laughter and smiles as bystanders snapped photos. Those wearing costumes competed in a contest. The crowd favorite was a Plunger dressed as a member of the TV show Duck Dynasty

The annual event takes place on New Year's Day at 1 PM. Following budget cuts at the city of Kirkland during the past recession, the Polar Bear Plunge continues to thrive as an "unofficial" event.

Few participants were consoled that the lake temperature was even warmer than the air: 44 degrees F.
