Over the past few weeks, we have enjoyed a few moments of warm sunshine and spring-like weather which has prompted folks around town to work on their gardens and do some spring cleaning. We spotted Jessica Greenway and Ken Nelson caring for a traffic circle near their home in Norkirk. Volunteers such as they are [...]

The Cow and The Coyote statue on Central Way once again is dressed in green and all ready for the first annual Kirkland Shamrock Run! The anonymous decorators have been at it again, dressing the otherwise dignified cow and coyote with a touch of the blarney. Erin go bragh! The decorating of the Cow and [...]

Sasi’s Cafe Donates “Snack Sacks” for 50 Volunteers at Cotton Hill Park
Fifty volunteers spent a cold morning at Cotton Hill Park clipping blackberries and digging roots out of muddy ground. When break time arrived, they were treated to “snack sacks” donated by Sasi’s Cafe. Each sack contained a cup of delicious hot soup, a slice of crusty bread, and a gourmet cookie. Cafe owner Roland Oberholzer [...]

Kudos to Waste Management for helping downtown Kirkland
On Friday, 15 workers from Waste Management helped the Kirkland Downtown Association remove the garland from the business district’s storefronts. Removal of the garland and lights is just one more clue that the holiday season has passed (ignore the giant Christmas Tree at Lake and Central. It is going soon). We say kudos and give [...]

LETTER | Thank you Asian Wok patrons for helping a stranger in need
Dear Editor, Kudos to the staff and patrons of the Asian Wok on Market Street! On Monday evening, a friend of mine had the misfortune of her car conking out as she tried to turn onto 18th Ave. from Market Street. When she called, I went to meet her. We were just chatting with police [...]

Christmas Tree Lighting Festival brings crowds to downtown
The annual downtown Kirkland Holiday Tree lighting on Saturday night was filled with carolers, kids, lights and of course, Santa Claus himself. Anonymously Yours | Happy Thanksgiving
Kirkland’s anonymous decorators have struck again, this time making sure the Cow and The Coyote statue on Central Way are well-dressed for the Thanksgiving party circuit. This year the coyote is sporting a holiday classic — an exquisitely detailed, hand-stitched turkey costume — fitting for any occasion. Not to be outdone, the cow is donning the latest [...]

LETTER | Thank you KFD and Public Works for protecting our house (poll)
Dear Editor: Major props, and I mean MAJOR props to the Kirkland Fire Department and the Kirkland Public Works Department who did such a great job last night protecting our house from flooding when a water main burst spewing 4,000 gallons of water per minute down the street. Trust me, that is a heck of [...]

Community is one of Kirkland’s greatest hallmarks
Sometimes it is difficult to step outside of the busy schedules we have created for ourselves and really appreciate the important things in life — our family and friends. How we work together to achieve common goals is one way to build a sense of community. In the past, the sense of community was strengthened [...]

Annual Halloween Parade brings kids downtown for trick or treating
A whole host of spooky kids, parents, dogs (and politicians) paraded down Heritage Park to the Pavillion at Marina Park in the Market Neighborhood Association’s annual Kids’ Halloween Parade. Anonymously Yours – Halloween Costumes for Cow and The Coyote
Once again the anonymous decorators have made their mark on downtown Kirkland, by dressing the Cow and The Coyote statue on Central Way for Halloween. Throughout the year, the statue mysteriously gets clothed in costumes celebrating the seasons. Quirky? Yes. Does it show pride in our community? Absolutely. We say, well done! The Cow and The Coyote is Kirkland’s [...]

As with many baby-boomers from the Puget Sound region, watching J. P. Patches was a part of my childhood morning routine. His television show brought laughter to our [...]
