The following essay on Kirkland was written by Rachel Walen, 11, of Golden, Colorado. Rachel turned in this work as a 5th grade homework project, and now she has shared it with us. Sometimes a child’s perspective helps us better appreciate the very special place in which we live. – Admin

The sisters were crossing eastbound in the crosswalk after traffic in the first lane had come to a stop. The sisters continued to cross when a vehicle [...]

splashy recommendation in this month’s Men’s Health magazine.

quite a challenge, especially for a small west coast business” notes
Kirklander Carl Bryant, owner of MrThoughtful. “I surely hope this gives
the business an extra boost, especially after the holidays” he added.

The folks over at Seattlepi.com took this amazing photo of people walking on the ice at sunset (please do not attempt to walk on it as it is very dangerous).
The extreme cold we have been experiencing has Juanita Beach Park into an ice rink for the birds.

Kirkland Views,
It was just last Tuesday that the long drawn out Kirkland election drama played out. What happened and why? Here are some of my own observations.
Kirkland voters were well able to make some fine distinctions when it came to filling out their own ballots. The fact that the [...]

Dear Editor:
It is apparent to even the most casual observer that Change is needed on Kirkland’s City Council. Which candidates will bring this change? The primary theme of Kirkland Council candidate Karen Tennyson’s recent campaign mailer documenting ‘differences’ between herself and Amy Walen is Ms. Tennyson’s City experience and knowledge of [...]

Dear Editor:
Our Parks Department vows to: “Encourage …groups and individual residents to get involved.” Since 2,000 Juanita Bay Park Rangers have contributed 12,000 volunteer hours enlightening the next generation of young people and enriching visitors’ knowledge of nature and wildlife. In 2008, rangers rounded up over 500 pounds of garbage that floated [...]

The allegations that I, and the No Kirkland Annexation Committee (NOKA) members have stolen or destroyed any signs is completely false. We are not thieves. Please do not refer to us as such. Every campaign has suffered destruction of signs, including ours.

Dear Editor,
I sent this letter to Karen Tennyson and I submit it as a letter to the editor in Kirkland Views:
I was disappointed in the deceptive way that you implied the support of Matt Gregory in your latest mailing. The selectively edited, out of context quote from the Reporter, was clearly intended to imply his endorsement, [...]

Dear Editor,
Having served on the Planning Commission for over nine years, I have had the opportunity to work closely with a majority of the current Council members. I have worked with Jim Lauinger, Mary-Alyce Burleigh, Tom Hodgson, Jessica Greenway and most recently, candidate Karen Tennyson.
With the exception of Mary-Alyce Burleigh, who has [...]

Matt, Rob and readers of Kirkland Views:
In response to a posting which appeared yesterday, please note that Matt Gregory was quoted (August 19, 2009 edition, Kirkland Reporter) as stating:
“I feel that Amy is not qualified,” said Gregory, adding that Walen has never been on any neighborhood boards or held an elected [...]

Upon my return from two weeks vacations abroad, I was shocked to find yesterday that my name and past quote from the Kirkland Reporter were highlighted on the recent Karen Tennyson mailed flyer. People have since contacted me about this as they took it as an implied endorsement, for which they knew [...]

In 1990 the legislature found that “uncoordinated and unplanned growth, together with a lack of common goals….pose a threat to the environment, sustainable economic development, and the health, safety, and high quality of life enjoyed by residents of this state. It is in the public interest that citizens, communities, local governments and the [...]

What is not disputed is the fact that 1.7 million more people and 1.2 million more jobs are coming to the Puget Sound Basin in the next 30 years. Smack dab in the middle of that Basin sits Kirkland with unparalleled natural beauty, a great quality of life, quality schools…where would you [...]

Kirkland has done its part planning for the growth that we know is coming to the region. We are currently meeting our GMA housing and employment targets and are one of the most densely populated communities in the Puget Sound region. The issues that come with growth are well known to the residents [...]

We are already one of the most-densely populated cities in Washington. We are meeting our density obligations under the Growth Management Act. Our Comprehensive Plans for downtown and the neighborhoods were developed over a lengthy process with input from all stakeholders. They allow for the density required by the GMA for a city [...]

This is a timely topic as our nation and region are in the midst of an economic downturn of unparallel proportions. The downturn has pointed out to our city and to cities across our state the danger of relying too much on sales tax. As the economy tanks so does sales tax.
As it [...]

Like most cities in the state, Kirkland got caught in the economic downturn and is now struggling to balance a budget with a critically serious revenue shortfall. Before the economy plunged last year, we were already fighting double-digit increases in health care costs for city employees who represent the greatest part of our [...]

Kirkland, and many other cities in our region, face serious “structural” problems with their budgets. As serious as that is, the solution is not that complicated. Absent real tax reform in Washington State, cities must face the reality of declining revenue during this recession and make the hard choices needed to [...]

According to the Puget Sound Regional Council, the Puget Sound Basin will grow by 1.6 million people during the next 20 years.
Washington enacted the Growth Management Act, which requires communities to plan for projected population growth. We are required to provide a certain number of dwelling units, commercial floor area and infrastructure to [...]

The current recession has hit the city and all levels of government very hard. It has shown us just how heavily dependent we are on sales tax to balance our budget and pay for essential services. Kirkland’s income and budget are based very heavily on sales tax revenues.
With the deepest recession in over [...]

King County’s cost cutting will close Kirkland-area parks
Dear Editor:
The King County Council is considering closing 5 of our 8 King County Parks in Kirkland possibly as soon as December 31, 2009. The recommendation from King County Executive Kurt Triplett is to zero-out funding for parks from the General Fund in 2010 by mothballing 39 parks in urban unincorporated areas. Mr. Triplett says the move will save $4.6 million and will cover a $56.4 million shortfall in projected tax revenues needed to maintain 2009 service levels. This will be reflected in the 2010 budget proposal that he is proposing to the King County Council.
October 1st is just around the corner. What will happen? The 2010 federal budget goes into effect without a cost of living increase in Social Security benefits. In fact, those who have Plan D will see a decrease in their monthly income because it doesn’t have the same protection against deflation, as [...]
