Amy Walen announces her candidacy for Kirkland City Council, position undeclared

According the Public Disclosure Commission (PDC), Amy Walen has thrown her hat into the ring and is running for Kirkland City Council. At this time, the new candidate has yet to declare which of the four open seats she will be targeting.
Details on the campaign will be forthcoming. Her husband Jim Walen, owner of Ford of Kirkland, said the couple moved to Kirkland five years ago from the Portland area.
Walen joins Mayor James Lauinger, Deputy Mayor Joan McBride and Penny Sweet as declared candidates for Kirkland City Council. Current office holders Mary-Alyce Burleigh and Tom Hodgson have yet to announce if they are running for re-election.

OK, lets go through the checklist of requirements for a good candidate and a positive asset on the council.
Business owner…….check
New to the council…..check
Knows how to meet a payroll…..check
Victim of the current ’spend, spend, spend’ municipal mentality…..check
Triple digit IQ…..check
Willing to get involved….check
Only time will tell, but this appears to be a legitimate contender.
Now if we can just convince Mary Alyce to run for governor.

John: I agree with all that you checked. Perhaps another checkmark is needed to identify her politics.

No more checkmark needed…City Council positions are non-political.

Dear G. G.: Being a non-political position means candidates do not have to declare a political party, that’s all. It’s naive to think that our elected officials do not have a political preference. They exude politics. It’s misleading to think otherwise.
You and I are political. We’ll vote differently. If there are reasons I should vote or not vote for a candidate, I need to know all the checkmarks, not just a selected few.

She was quoted in the Reporter article as being a “liberal.” I am relieved candidates like Amy and Penny are willing to run. We need smart, business minded, inelligent, thoughtful, and progressive leaders in Kirkland. And being in the annexation area, and believing that annexation is vital to our community and the responsible thing to do for our region, I am please to hear she is supportive of that as well.

After attending a council meeting on April 7th I am positive we need people like Amy on the council who will look at the cost for the annexation and the debt Kirkland has now. I like some other people who have wrote in see us having to dip into our pockets to help. I am strongly against the annexation to Kirkland. They do not seem to be a very well run city. On the other hand Bothell can annex us withoug having us to dip into our pockets.

Shouldn’t a candidate know her Zip Code if she wants to be on the City Council?
