Kirkland Deputy Mayor, Joan McBride, announces her intention to seek a fourth term on the Kirkland City Council. A 50-year resident of Kirkland, Joan is excited to continue to serve the community.
“In my fourth term, I intend to pursue goals that continue to build community and enhance our regional standing. I am committed to preserving our quality of life and pedestrian friendly neighborhoods as we deal with hard economic times.”
Joan has served as Deputy Mayor for seven years and sits on the council’s Finance Committee, co-chairs the Active Living Task Force, and City/School Partnership Committee. She is the Kirkland representative to the Eastside Transportation Partnership and a suburban cities’ representative to the King Conservation District Advisory Board. In addition, she is currently the vice chair of both the WIRA 8 salmon recovery board and the King County Flood Advisory Board.
Among her many accomplishments include the successful preservation of 66 affordable housing units near downtown, working with Sound Transit to increase their contribution to a downtown transit center from 5 million to 13.3 million, fund raising efforts to save beloved public art sculptures, and partnering with Public Health to produce walking maps for each of the 13 neighborhoods in Kirkland. For her work on the Kirkland Walking Maps she received an award for Seattle King County Public Health. In addition, Joan has worked many years on pedestrian amenities including support for pedestrian connections such as the 100th street pedestrian and public safety bridge, flashing crosswalks, and support for Kirkland’s non-motorized plan. This year she served on the host committee for the Pro Bike/Pro Walk National Conference.
Before joining the Kirkland City Council, Joan served five years on the Houghton Community Council including stints as Chair and Co-chair. She is currently semi-retired and lives in the Moss Bay neighborhood. Joan has three children and is a graduate of Lake Washington High School and The Evergreen State College.
In 2007, Joan was honored at the Elected Official of the Year” by the Alliance of Eastside Agencies for her “outstanding contributions to human services on the Eastside’ and the “2007 Special Service Award” from the King Conservation District.
