FDA Recall: Sugar Free Milk Chocolate Peanuts Because of Possible Health Risk

If you have purchased these bulk chocolate covered peanuts from Houghton Market, Kirkland, WA, please contact the market to determine if these products were manufactured using peanuts recalled by Peanut Corporation of America.

The FDA has issued a recall of milk chocolate peanuts sold in the bulk section of Houghton Market. The recalled products were sold to this store between April 3, 2007 and February 6, 2009 in 5 pound bags under the brand name Koppers and distributed by Crown Pacific Fine Foods of Kent. No known illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recalled a product that was sold through Houghton Market and has produced the following press release

Crown Pacific Fine Foods, Kent, WA is recalling SUGAR FREE (S/F) MILK CHOCOLATE PEANUTS distributed between April 3, 2007 and February 6, 2009 with the lot code of 07059, BECAUSE OF THE POSSIBLE HEALTH RISK of being potentially contaminated with Salmonella.  The SUGAR FREE (S/F) MILK CHOCOLATE PEANUTS were manufactured with peanuts recalled by Peanut Corporation of American because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.  Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. 

SUGAR FREE (S/F) MILK CHOCOLATE PEANUTS was distributed to ONE retail store, Houghton Market located in Kirkland, Washington.

This product would have been sold in the bulk section of the retail store.  The product was sold to this retail store between April 3, 2007 and February 6, 2009, in 5 pound plastic bulk bags.  The brand name was KOPPERS, SUGAR FREE (S/F) MILK CHOCOLATE PEANUTS, Item # 607-1, and Lot Code 07059.  The label includes NO SUGAR ADDED MILK CHOCOLATE PEANUTS FOR KOPPERS CHOCOLATE SPECIALTY COMPANY INC., nutritional facts, and lot code 07059.  No expiration date or other codes are listed. 

No known illnesses have been reported to date in connection with these products.  The recall was initiated after it was determined that the peanut product received was manufactured with product being recalled by Peanut Corporation of America.  Crown Pacific Fine Foods has informed FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.
