Official City of Kirkland Newsletter published

2

The City of Kirkland has just published its most recent official quarterly newsletter, the Kirkland City Update. The Update is a vehicle by which City Hall communicates with the citizens of Kirkland.

The Kirkland City Update has witnessed several changes in the past as a result of changes in communications strategies. Once there was a printed publication mailed to homes and businesses which was replaced with a full-page ad in the Kirkland Reporter. Then they decided to publish a printed version three times a year. Going forward, the Update will be available quarterly as an online publication and as one annual printed publication.

You may download the December 2008 edition, as well as past editions at: www.ci.kirkland.wa.us/depart/CMO/cityupdate.htm

I got this in the mail yesterday and I wasn’t impressed. It is a wise decision to cut this expensive mailing from the budget because it wasn’t done very well. It looked like it was slapped together at the last minute and only 1/2 of it is newsworthy. I call the rest of it puff. When ever I see full color selfpromoting ads in the mailbox I always think they have too much money to spend hiding that they have nothing to say. A page in the Courier would be cheaper and greener.

Put your glasses on Ben. I don’t mind a little crotchety cynicism once in awhile but at least be factual in doing so. The City Update looks well done to me. Rather than self promoting advertising, most of the content appears to be educational and informative. Sure, in some instances recapping events, they’ll only put out their own point of view but its not reasonable to expect them to offer counterpoints in their own publication. Graphics are good, writing is concise and informative, and the layout is clean. Understand that not everybody is likely to be as resourceful as you may be in getting the information, which is available from other sources. Substitute a lot of the legislative bulletins mailed out to self-promote an incumbent legislator and your comments are valid. I can’t speak to the cost since the City doesn’t include me in the bidding process, a point of contention I do have with them. But the City Update is a good looking publication. As for greener, it is labeled as being printed on recycled paper. The continuing thought that any use of paper is bad reflects a lack of understanding how paper is produced these days. Eat corn? Sure you do. It’s a renewable resource. These days so are trees grown specifically to make a lot of paper and in a sustainable manner. Not to mention the re-use of paper put in recycle bins. What do all the anti-paper consumers use to wipe their rear ends? Maybe the City can take the leaves they rake and re-sell them back to those of you who don’t want trees used to make toilet paper. Or if you don’t want to read the City Update, then give it a second use and save on some two-ply.
