UPDATE Dec 24, 2008 Kirkland Storm Update #10:
Dec. 24, 11:30 a.m.
For the morning of December 24, the City of Kirkland encourages residents and businesses to be informed about weather and traffic conditions and be prepared for rain that is likely to result in more hazardous conditions. The National Weather Service (www.weather.gov/seattle) has issued a winter weather advisory for the east Puget Sound lowlands and other areas in effect until 4 p.m. today. Snow is expected to continue this morning and is anticipated to change to rain in locations below 500 to 1000 feet. A winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. For City of Kirkland storm updates, go to www.ci.kirkland.wa.us or subscribe to the Neighborhood E-Bulletin.
Kirkland Residents Are Asked to Help the City by:
Being mindful and being patient as the City continues its snow plowing operations per the Priority Snow Routes.
First priority for snow plowing is given to roads that are near Evergreen Hospital and lead to and from I-405, transit routes, schools and fire stations.
Second priority will be given to arterials that have above normal traffic use.
Steep and hilly public roadways that are difficult to maintain will be closed.
The following roads are currently closed.
NE 52nd from Lake Washington Blvd to 108th Avenue
108th Avenue at the top of the hill at NE 44th
The following Avenues between Market Street and 1st Street: 10th,11th, 12th, 13th,14th,15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th

Properly managing extra garbage and recycling. Waste Management is offering tips on how to store extra materials. To view its “Tip Sheet,” go to www.ci.kirkland.wa.us. To learn about service schedules, go to www.wmnorthwest.com/weatherboard.html or call 1-800-592-9995.
Clearing sidewalks of snow. Commercial and residential property owners are reminded that they are responsible for keeping sidewalks in front of homes and businesses clear of snow and other debris. (Kirkland Municipal Code 19.20)
Clearing the area around water meters. This will help City crews provide assistance, when necessary, in the event of a water service leak or broken pipe to your residence or business.
Clearing the area around fire hydrants. This will assist the Fire Department in locating them.
Being aware of the potential for a roof to become overloaded with heavy snow and rain and consulting with a licensed and bonded contractor about snow removal.
Checking storm drain grates frequently to make sure they are free of snow, ice and other debris.
Do not remove the grate from the storm drain opening; this does not unclog the system and creates a hazard for everyone.
Raking snow, ice and other debris away from storm drains near your house or business.

Monday Garbage Service Cancelled in Snohomish County & Most of King County

WSDOT asks drivers to check out their entire commute before heading out in the snow
Widespread snowfall today has created tricky conditions for drivers. Stay off the roads if you can. But if you must venture out please check your entire commute.
If it’s nice in your neighborhood, it may not be as nice at your destination. Check the roads you will travel for collisions, delays, abandoned vehicles. We are shifting trucks and crews to the areas where conditions are worst. If you are on the road, please make room for our trucks.
If you find yourself on the road and you do not want to travel any farther, consider getting off the freeway entirely or move to the right side. Please do not stop in the travel lanes or on the left shoulder. It prevents our road crews from getting through and it prevents emergency vehicles from accessing true emergencies. They need that left lane.
Thank you for your continued help. We are working as quickly as we can to get our goods in good condition. You can help by driving for conditions and remaining prepared for all types of winter weather.
Updates can be found on the WSDOT website, King County Website and the city of Seattle winter storm website.

I am so excited to find your blog. Thanks for informing me of the road closures. One suggestion I have is to add traffic, school info and weather. One complaint I have is that your blog is not much about the South Rose Hill Neighborhood. We in this part of Kirkland dont have any good source of local info. More focus on our neck of the woods and less advertising would be appreciated. There’s my holiday wish list to you.
