Women's soccer crosstown rivals: Lake Washington vs. Juanita

The crosstown rivals Lake Washington Kangaroos and Juanita Rebels met in a duel at LWHS’s Mac Stadium on Tuesday night. Rain was falling at kickoff but let up for the remainder of the game.

The Kangs had not forgotten their defeat by the Rebels last season and came ready to play. LW pressed hard and played possession, firing off several early shots. The offense was led by Cassie Liveley, Emma Holm, and Emily Bunnell who made several great runs and had dangerous shots on goal.

The Kangs scored in the 25th minute as Kennedy Nicholson sent a long feed upfield to racing Shelby Bergren who beat her defender and then fired a pointblank shot which bounced off the far post into the goal past Rebel goalkeeper Noelle Laursen.

Then, in the 32nd minute, the Kang’s insurance goal was set up by a throw-in by Cassie Lively which was headed by Emily Robinson to Sara Crauer who passed back to Cassie Lively. Lively then lofted a cross to the top of the box where Kaiti Brixey settled it, switched the ball to her left foot, and then with finesse, cut the ball back across the goalface and into the net for the score. Juanita fought back, with attacks from Danika Bethune, Karissa Radke, and Hannah Johnson. The Kangs went into the half with a 2-0 lead.

The LW team did not let down in the second half and kept attacking. Jessie Zogg launched a long free kick which bounced off the Rebel keeper for a corner. As time ticked down, the Kangs pressured and launched many shots, including SOG’s by Sarah Wyrick, Brooke Jackson, Chloe Clowers, and Emily Robinson, assisted by the passing of Emma Holm.

LW Goalkeepers Maeve O’Connor and Jayme Dailey were credited with the shut-out. The defensive back line of Callie Weber, Jessie Zogg, Kennedy Nicholson, and Amy Johnson share in the credit for the shutout with their strong, coordinated efforts.

Lake Washington Head Coach Suzanne Hart and Assistant Coach Suzanne Soine were very pleased with the way the girls played. The Kangs look forward to Thursday night when they take on the Mercer Island Islanders at home.
