Kirkland Parkplace Public Hearing Packs the House

5

The Planning Commission held the final public hearing on the Touchstone Parkplace PAR on Thursday night in Council Chambers at City Hall. The room was packed with thoughtful, impassioned people, many of whom were sporting “Green Light” buttons or “See the Blue Sky” stickers.

The unofficial tally of of speakers who took advantage of the opportunity to address the Commission were:

30 people spoke in favor of the Touchstone PAR

17 people spoke in opposition to the Touchstone PAR

Touchstone and CRD reported the tally of speakers on behalf of both sides of the debate. Fortunately, they both came up with the same count. This is refreshing since after the last public hearing on this subject, both sides had different counts.

Planning Commission still accepting comments on Parkplace

Individuals who have not yet given their opinion to the Planning Commission are encouraged to do so prior to the November 5 deadline. This will give staff the needed time to include the letters in the package for the next meeting to be held on November 13. You may submit written comments by letter or email to City of Kirkland Senior Planner,  Angela Ruggeri at aruggeri@ci.kirkland.wa.us

The public hearing last night was the 27th public meeting on Parkplace since this process began.

First I want to say kudos to the administrator for hosting a discussion about development of downtown. With our busy lives it is cool to have the ability to engage in a conversation about this without having to go to meetings. I hope someday that we can have a discussion about Totem Lake Mall! It may not be as robust of discussion as Park Place but everybody agrees that something needs to be done there. Thanks

Well, it’s not much but here is the city’s comment:

      October 2008
The City is awaiting submittal of a Design Review application for Phase I of the Totem Lake Mall redevelopment project. Phase I consists of the redevelopment of the Lower Mall and street improvements to 120th Avenue NE. At this time, the City does not know the tenant mix being contemplated by DDR.

Yea I read that and for such a large potential for development and revenue there doesn’t seem to be any momentum as in Park Place.

I suppose the developer needs to submit something that someone objects to so we can get the conversation going!

This article in today’s Seattle Times has a little on the stalled development at Totem Lake. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2008315241_slowretail270.html Does not appear that there is going to be anything happening there soon. Which means if we do want to improve the retail tax base of the city we are going to have to rely on enhancing downtown retail and ParkPlace – at least for now.
