Kirkland Library 308 Kirkland Avenue

Park Lane is a central corridor to shopping, dining, public art and community activities in downtown Kirkland.  Over the past months, business and property owners and Park Lane users have been working with the City and its consultant to develop design concepts for what the corridor between Lake Street and 3rd Street could look like in the future.  Please learn more about the future of Park Lane by attending this open house. Public comment will help develop a final preferred concept.

This past Wednesday, at the final Kirkland Market Day, the above project was presented at a booth. My impression was that any Kirkland funds or time expended on this effort is a complete waste.

The attractiveness and utility of the concept is not the problem. Projects such as this have come up before, and the short-sightedness of the local commercial interests (shop owners and operators) has been complete. They have been adamant in their opposition. They always want maximum parking right in front of their own galleries and shops. These owners have never seen an advantage in making Kirkland a walker friendly community. Add in the complete obliviousness off the City Council majority and you can see why a project of this type faces certain death. Disappointing, but a fact of current Kirkland life.

jim, there is merchant support for some of the options. Even closing Park Lane entrely to traffic has the endorsement of some of them. You can contact the project coordinator ant City Hall, Kari Page, and ask her about this. On the other hand, you are correct that some merchants jsut want more free parkiong as close to their store as possible and have no interst in a walking business district.

Both of these aside, I think the budget crunch and lack of an overwhelming consensus is going to make this another plan that will gather dust on a shelf.

Do the people who authorize these expenditures not remember Lake and Central? Issues for Park Lane as I recall: Free Parking and how to access businesses for pickup and delivery. I agree that this is another plan to gather dust. I’d rather put the money into reserves. Al
