Guest Commentary | Keep Kirkland Family Friendly

Note: The following letter has been broadly distributed around town and was forwarded to us by several readers. It refers to a promotional activity involving bikini-clad women during the Kirkland Classic Car Show which took place last month. – Editor

Dear Neighbor,

Origins of Keep Kirkland Family Friendly Initiative

The initiative to Keep Kirkland Family Friendly began in response to offensive promotional activity in downtown at community events.

The Incident
One particular incident occurred on a Sunday afternoon in August 2010 while my husband, eight-year son and I attended the Kirkland Classic Car Show. We were actually participating in a water balloon race and were listening to the Andante – Kirkland Youth Choir perform when were exposed to “entertainers” walking all through the streets of downtown in Brazilian cut swimwear and high heels – see photos. Later, when we went to buy my little boy an ice cream cone, they were in Coffee & Cone, the ice cream store – see photos.

I feel that this type of promotional activity is completely inappropriate for a community event. I don’t want to be exposed to it and I certainly don’t want my son or any other children exposed to it.

More importantly, I’m concerned with the direction promotional activity in our city will head if we don’t address the issue. For example, at the Wednesday Market will Lover’s Package have “models” in lingerie, Deseret Sun have “entertainers” in thongs, and Tiki Joe’s have “go-go” dancers?

Who’s Responsible?
This specific incident happened during the 2010 Kirkland Classic Car Show, which is put on by Legends Car Club. Jon Helle owner of Bikini Beach is a sponsor of the Car show and hired the “entertainers”. The event is permitted through the City of Kirkland Parks Department as a special event. I’ve spoke with all three parties with little result.

Legends Car Club Chair Teri Fletcher (sic) was reluctant to put any kind of restraints on Jon Helle’s promotional activity stating he is one of their biggest sponsors and fees for the event must be paid in advance.
I spoke with Bikini Beach owner, Jon Helle (sic) during the event to express my objections with his promotional activity for a community event he told me if I “don’t want my son exposed to it don’t bring him downtown”.

Although the Parks Department admits there are “numerous complaints every year” for this specific issue, they are unaware of any of regulation they can employ to curb the inappropriate commercial promotional activity.

The Parks Department has a “de-briefing” on the event this Friday, August 11th. I have submitted a letter of complaint, along with photos to ensure the issue is formally addressed.
If you would like to support the KKFF Initiative please give a quick call to the Parks Department and let them know you find this type of promotional activity objectionable.
Please Call 425 – 587 3347, Sudie Elkayssi, Parks Department Special Event Permitting

Additional Action
I will be taking additional action to address this issue at all levels of the city government and will enlist community leaders including KAN, Neighborhood Associations, and Eastside Moms to protect our collective interests. In addition, I will pursue violations in planning, code enforcement, city, and county ordinances and licensing. Further, I will contact local media outlets to reach out to the community.

Although the current focus of KKFF is cleaning up objectionable promotional activity, KKFF has an ongoing mission to preserve a community atmosphere throughout the City of Kirkland.

Thank you for Supporting Our Community.

    puritanical
shrew that espouses long-debunked feminist nonsense (i.e.; All men are
rapists, all cosmetics are bad, admiring a beautiful woman somehow demeans
    her, etc.)

The girls modeling the swimwear were sweet, tasteful and beautiful. The
event was all about cars, water, music and summer. This was a natural and
    fun addition to the event.

The creeps from Uncorked once again blocked the exposure of this retailer
from 95% of the people walking along Kirkland Ave. His grosses for the
day were far LESS than the previous Sunday when there was NOTHING going on
    in Kirkland.

He is willing to pay off Uncorked or the city or whoever he has to pay off
to prevent the ‘Artist’ tents (selling insurance, chiropractic, aluminum
windows, mortgages, subscriptions) from hiding his business.

Uncorked made $300 with each of the blocking tents – too bad Bikini Beach lost
    $5,000.

What would you have him do to try and counteract the trinket tents? Women
    in Burkas?

So Jennifer, we apologize for the fact beautiful women bother you so. We
apologize that retailers are struggling to counteract actions of outside
promoters. We apologize your husband and son were ‘forced’ to look at
these girls. We even apologize for heterosexuality.

    Now get over it.

That’s just asinine. A person should be able to take a child to an outdoor mid-day event without seeing some stupid tarts cheeks. For crying out loud, how stupid do you have to be to call that puritanical?

  • Geesaenz

“For example, at the Wednesday Market will Lover’s Package have “models” in lingerie, Deseret Sun have “entertainers” in thongs, and Tiki Joe’s have “go-go” dancers? ” GREAT IDEAS! Maybe you have an insecurity issue. I don’t know but I really believe you need to chill out. The world is not perfect and neither is Kirkland. I live in Kirkland and like to be able to be myself and let others be themselves. If you find an event distasteful or offensive then either don’t go or leave. Don’t be pushing your values down everyone’s throats. I would not push mine down yours……..

  • FM

I’ve got to agree, if you don’t like the entertainment on offer at a special event, then just don’t attend. Far as I can tell no laws were broken, including the right to free speech.

  • Kellie Jordan

John, while I agree with your opinion on the lady who has an issue with bikinis, nice picture by the way, I take issue with your rants about Uncorked. What have you done to try and work with Uncorked? I have been working with Jon on this issue for next year to make sure that his store will not be blocked next year. Perhaps if there was communication between Bold hat and Bikini Beahc prior to the event this could have been prevented this year. My work on Uncorked resulted in over 17 Kirkland restaurants showcased at Uncorked, all of them extremely happy with the results. It takes communication, partnership and working toward a common goal. But that isnt newsworthy is it?

Wow, this is one uptight and hostile position…

We are VERY fortunate to have beaches in and around downtown Kirkland. Bikinis, swimsuits, and trunks… all are sort of the defacto “dress code”. If you do not like that, think your son or husband will be harmed by seeing some beautiful young women, just come downtown on a different weekend. It is no different than NOT going downtown because you want to avoid the sometimes rowdy bar scene late in the evening. Life is not perfect.

For me having lived in Stockholm (Sweden), I still have a very hard time understanding why we here (in general) have such a hard time with the human body out in public. From May and throughout summer, city parks in Stockholm are lined with girls/mamas/ladies tanning topless, many with kids running around naked along the water’s edge. No one lifts an eye lid or gets upset over that. It is just the human body, beautiful in many cases.

While I was not downtown this specific weekend, I would have loved to have seen those (beautiful) models. We need more of these “mini-events”, where local merchants use the tools in the their toolboxes and promote their businesses.
I see this is as no different than a coffee shop giving away samplings of free coffee, or a car dealer parks a car with some ads promoting their business. A bikini shop wants to showcase their ware, and what better way to do it than on live models?

  • PlayOutside

Jennifer you may be more comfortable living in the United Arab Emirates where they arrest and jail women for walking around in Bikinis!

  • JohnGilday

    Hi Kellie,
Actually, I tried to talk to the two top people at Bold Hat Productions of Seattle when they blocked all the merchants back in 2009. I left 2 phone messages and I went to them directly with a blueprint of an alternative tent layout that wouldn’t cause such great harm to Kirkland merchants trying to recover financially from a cold, hard winter.

What did Phil Megenhardt do in response to our pleadings? He called the police and tried to have me arrested.

So, in answer to your question “What have you done to try and work with Uncorked?
    a) protect myself
    b) urge the City of Kirkland to stop giving them tens of thousands of dollars even though they
    never show a profit
    c) help Terri Fletcher get Uncorked from leaching off The Car Show’s weekend by moving the
Car Show weekend (SUCCESS! thanks to Terri)
    d) hoping each night that Phil chokes on his lies

If you have other ideas for something else I can do to limit the damage done by Uncorked would be warmly appreciated.

P.S.: What kind of ‘artists’ were brought into Kirkland to populate the offending tents?

    – an appliance store
    – Seattle Times subscription
    – a garbage company
    – a credit union
    – The New york Times subscription sales
    – water sports sales
    – dog magazine subscription sales
    – lifestyle magazine subscription sales
    – cell phone sales
    – BBQ equipment sales
    – a credit union
    – a back cracker or two
    – aluminum windows
    – dog training
    – corporate gift bags
    – reprints of cartoon strips

Did I miss any other artists?

IMHO, you were hired by Bold Hat / Uncorked to try and get your relative (associated with The Car Show) to back off and let Uncorked leach onto the banner, the advertising and their email list.

How’s that working for you so far?

    Nothin’ but love,

    John

  • Kellie Jordan

Actually John, I was hired by Bold Hat to recruit Kirkland restaurants to participate in Uncorked, I was quite successful in doing that, 17 out of 20 participating restaurants were from Kirkland. I was not hired to get my sister to back off, I was asked to see what I could do to help both parties cooperate for both events to be more successful. I support my sister and the car show, I always have. As far as the Car show weekend if you would take the time to look at the history of events in downtown Kirkand in the summer you would know that the Car show moved to the signature Kirkland event weekend, not the other way around, We can keep up this silly and non productive conversation for Kirkland to see and get a kick out of but I prefer to agree to disagree. How about you?

  • A concerned parent

Don’t ever bring you kid to a beach. There are women in bikini’s there. Oh, and don’t watch tv ever either. You never know when a Victoria Secret commercail may come on. You should probably just lock you kid in a closet and don’t let him out until he’s 18. Who knows what he could be exposed to if he goes out in public. The world is a very scary place!

  • Litmus0001

    (1) Haven’t you ever seen “classic car” pictures? They all have women in bikinis. This should not be any kind of surprise.

    (2) Your problem is with you. If you want your dear sweet young son to grow up with a healthy sense of self-worth, adjusted to living a life in society, you yourself might want to get some therapy and learn to accept other people, their sexuality, and your own sexuality.

  • just one noise

I think she is scared that her son and husband will find out not all women are fat and angry like her. Best to keep them in the house with the doors locked up. And never ever let them on the internet that would be very very bad.

    Hello everyone,
It’s not typically in my nature to jump in on these types of debates, but I have this voice in my head that keeps saying “Get Involved”.
    So, here goes…..
I will start and end my comment with the same statement… Let’s Keep Kirkland Family Friendly!
That said, I must disagree with Jennifer Todd, that the girls in bikinis made this event NOT family friendly. I do agree that this issue could, and obviously has, made some people uncomfortable and I say GOOD! This is the way our free society is supposed to work. If Jennifer Todd is passionate enough about this issue to take a stand and take the steps to (in her opinion) Keep Kirkland Family Friendly, then i say, go for it. I personally would not choose this issue, as a leading issue, for KKFF to throw a saddle on, but that’s just my opinion.
I am 100% in favor of keeping Kirkland family friendly while balancing the freedoms and the rights of everyone.
As part of the 4th of July events in downtown Kirkland, I was honored to meet and photograph many of our local Veterans. Everyone realizes what the men and women of our armed forces have sacrificed over many wars to allow us the freedom to publicly complain about bikinis. We encourage our children to stand and honor these Veterans as they pass by us on the parade route. But hold on a second…. War is ugly, War is bad, War is downright uncomfortable, and War is NOT “family friendly”! Fast forward to near the end of parade…. Yep, girls in bikinis.
If enough people were offended by Public Display of Bikini, the Bikini store would soon be out of business. Its just the way it works!
So, my recommendation would be to drop the bikinis and put this passion into some other, more substantial issues, because I also want to Keep Kirkland Family Friendly!

    Jeff Heinz

  • JohnGilday

I couldn’t agree more – especially about dropping the bikinis… but hey, thats just me.

  • JohnGilday

You and I are just fine, always will be.
I’m all about peace, love and understanding… just ask anyone who knows me!

But re: Phil Megenhardt, I want to toss him and Bold Hat Productions to the lawyers and wait until he squeals like Ned Beatty in Deliverance.

    Smooches,

    John

  • Topspin06

My god woman – you are WAY too uptight. I don’t think this is about your son, i think it is about YOU. There are so many messed up things in this world and you choose to focus on bikinis at a car show?? REALLY?? I mean honestly, do you read the news? Try picking something that matters to focus your energy on! Perhaps hunger, homelessness, veterans, etc!

  • Lomingusa

    Right on…Mr. Selander,
I totally agreed what you said. It’s a free country here and we have the right to exercise our freedom of speech.
My mom is Japanese and we used to take bath at the local community pool, PUBLIC and naked. Why is it a big deal of little bikini.
Besides, there is a lot more stuff to do around Kirkland downtown and choose the one it fits your whole families.

  • Bill Henkens

$13 trillion national debt, $billions in state debt, $millions in county and city debt and you are worried about girls in swim suits? Really?

  • Homegrown Kirkland

Men like boobs and cars. It in not unfathomable or surprising that they would combine the too. Furthermore, the Kirkland Car show is extremely family friendly, compared with other car events. THe girls were in bikinis in the summertime. Your 8 year old was not exposed to anything more than he would see at the beach.

  • CS

    John Gilday,

Do you lay awake at night thinking of this stuff? I had to look up the reference to Deliverence but it was spot on!

You are a sick and twisted individual but I know I am not alone in hopeing you never change a thing.

When is the newspaper coming back?

  • chosetowagmore

Miss Todd has the right to complain. Luckily we have the right to ignore her. Shoot – if I looked that good in a bikini, I’d be out there too…. sigh.

  • I have no time on my hands

Next year, i will ask the Bikini Beach girls to model the latest Burkha swimwear.

  • Anonymous

Yes, there are always more important issues in the world: Soldiers are dying, children are starving, oil is spilling, earthquakes are destroying whole cities.

I don’t care about bikinis downtown, either. But it’s pretty weak to belittle someone else’s concerns because they don’t measure up to the big, important issues of the world.

  • Bill Henkens

Belittle? No, I don’t belittle anyone. I’m just pointing out that we have more to worry about than young women in swimsuits.
