Representative Springer responds to anonymous attack about Kirkland Uncorked

The political mudslinging in the 45th District has begun. The opening shot came in the form of an anonymous email attacking 45th Legislative District Rep. Larry Springer (D) of Kirkland, who is running for re-election in November. The email titled, “No money for Larry Springer,” makes accusations against Springer and attacks Kirkland Uncorked, the three-day self-described “wine, dine and design” festival at Marina Park July 16-18. The email was distributed around the district and was written by an individual using the pseudonym, “Foolme Once.”

Representative Springer has sent us a response along with a copy of the “Foolme Once” email (see below).

The following is Representative Springer’s unedited response:

If there was any doubt we are in campaign season (they don’t call it the “silly season” for nothing) the email being sent around regarding the Kirkland Uncorked event and my alleged duplicity in its “business ravaging” effect should be proof.  After 3 campaigns for the state legislature I have come to expect this kind of attack and my default response is to ignore it, especially when these attacks come from people who clearly do not have the strength of their convictions to even sign their name.  The same thing happened to Penny in her run for city council last year and, unfortunately, is a disturbing trend in thisera of electronic instant communications where anonymity is so easy.

However, I have also learned that to ignore these character attacks simply leaves  those who read them with a question…could it be true?

So here’s my response:

No, my business is not the only business to benefit from Uncorked (truth be told….we basically break even.)  With 1000’s of people coming to downtown I suspect several merchants see an increase in foot traffic. It is the responsibility of those merchants to take advantage of that kind of traffic in the same way they do during the Christmas Tree Lighting, 4th of July, the former Art Festival, the numerous bike races and runs., etc.

I do not know who the anonymous writer(s) of the email might be.  They claim to have approached me to do something about Uncorked but conveniently avoid the reality that the event is an agreement between the festival sponsor, the City of Kirkland, the Hope Heart Institute, the beneficiary of proceeds from the festival, and the Washington Wine Commission.  To suggest any one person could insert himself into that contract and cancel the event is extraordinarily naïve and clearly politically expedient.

I do remember some conflicts that occurred with my friend Jon Hesse at Bikini Beach and with my other good friend Terri Fletcher from the Classic Car Show.  But I can tell you I would never use my position as a State Representative (former Mayor makes me old news I’m afraid) to influence a local issue such as this.  We have ethics, even though occasionally people like the writer would conveniently like us to ignore them.

While I’d like to think I have the gravitas to solve all the writers’ alleged issues in “5 minutes” I am afraid they must be thinking of someone else.

And oh by the way, the Kirkland Classic Car Show, founded by another good friend, Dick Beazell, has been in downtown Kirkland for the past 8 years, not “decades” as the email would have you believe.

And another thing, a quick check with city hall would tell you the City of Kirkland and its Lodging Tax Advisory Committee have made the funding decisions for the festival and the funds allocated to the event are controlled by the City Council.  That might be a better venue for the writers’ concerns than with someone who has not served on the council for the past 6 years.

So, there you have it.  It is so disappointing to have to go through this ridiculous exercise when what we should be discussing is how we are going find adequate funding for K-12 education, deal with a state budget crisis, and how we are going to assure Washington climbs out of this recession.  These are the questions upon which you should decide whether I am worthy of your support, let alone a campaign contribution.

Thanks for listening.

The horrid way that Kirkland Uncorked has treated the merchants and residents of Kirkland demands a response.

Since the owner of Bold Hat Productions won’t dain to even respond to our concerns we took them to our former mayor and current state representative Larry Springer who is also the only merchant to benefit from having uncorked in Kirkland.

Why do we bring trinket tents to clog up Kirkland Avenue and block merchants who are barely making it anyway?

Why does Uncorked get tens of thousands of tax dollars that they were supposed to repay but never did?

Why does Uncorked leach off of the Car Show that has been a Kirkland institution for decades?

When the head of the car show asked for a different weekend for Uncorked she was rudely dismissed.

When Jon from Bikini Beach tried to get attention to his shop that was blocked from view by nonstop tents he was visited by the police.

When Jon Gilday tried to meet with the head of Uncorked to suggest a different layout that wouldn’t hurt our businesses, Uncorked head Phil Megenhardt called the police on him too.

Bold Hat Productions looks down thier nose at our Car Show but insists on doing their event on the same weekend.  And they do it with OUR TAX MONEY!

We don’t need food vendors taking money from our restaurants and we don’t need trinket tents blocking our merchants and we don’t need Uncorked leaching off of The Car Show and taking massive amounts of parking and borrowing nearly $100,000 of our money with no intention of paying it back.

So when Larry Springer, the one man that could have solved all of these problems in five minutes, asks you for a campaign contribution, please tell him “not this year, we are losing too much money because of Uncorked.”

Thank you for your time

The second commandment (3rd in the Jewish Talmudic Division) states:

'Thou shalt not take the name of the lord thy god in vain'

Mind if I piggyback on that?

Using my name without my permission to bolster your arguments sucks. To
infer Terri's name sucks. To do it without signing your own name is
    downright cowardly.

I agree that the guy that runs Kirkland Uncorked is a jerk, but to assume
Larry can step in and make it all sweetness and light is asinine. And to
assign Phil Meganhardt's sins and hubris to Springer flies in the face of
reason. I also agree that tents that block businesses on Kirkland Ave are
a bad idea. I also agree Kirkland dollars shouldn't go to Seattle
promotion companies. But there is one big difference between you and I,
    Mr. Foolme Once…

    I sign my letters.

    Sincerely,

    John Gilday

PS: Hey Larry, I noticed you referred to your good friend Jon and your
good friend Terri and your good friend Dick. What the hell am I, chopped
    liver?

Obviously not in agreement with “Foolme Once”, since I DO like these small summer festivals we have in Kirkland. They bring people in to town, they create a “festive atmosphere”, and they live up our sometimes pretty dull downtown (shouldn't have to be like that since we have the BEST located downtown in the Seattle area with wonderful views, openess towards the water, a marina/beach, close to freeway and there IS plenty parking if one just dare to walk a few blocks – free parking).

How downtown activities are funded will probably always be up for debate, but I for sure have no prblem in using some City $$$ in promoting events like we have do have. I assume there's a chance certain businesses can benefit more than others, and that certain business can feel blocked. But instead of just complaining about being blocked, why not set up a tent in front of your store/restaurant and try to benefit from the crowds that do visit/stroll during these summery events.

First of all, Foolme once, I do not appreciatte you using the Car Show and Uncorked to attack Larry Springer. I have been a supporter of Larry Springer for over a decade, a decade being 10 years. You stated in your email that the Car Show has been here for over a decade, and actually the car show is coming up on it's 8th year. If you have issues with Larry Springer, then why don't you sign your name, instead of using our venue to attack him. Larry and his wife Penny have given years of service to this community, and the state, and I can guarantee you that they always sign their name to anything they post. John Gilday is correct, you are a coward.

    Sigh- I hate campaign season!
My experience of the restaurants downtown during Uncorked was that they were pretty packed out- we had to go to a couple before we could find a space. And- Lord help me- I have to agree with John about using a Seattle production company for this (as well as the one that was used for the Kirkland First website promoting Kirkland businesses!) I wasn't making the decisions though so there may have been pieces I don't know about- such as did any Kirkland businesses actually throw their hat into the ring to do these jobs?

I would like to address the misinformation about Uncorked, If the LTAC committee did not think that Uncorked would bring money and visitors to Kirkland and did not meet the criteria set forth by the state of Washington they would not have received any LTAC funding. As far as “looking down their nose” at the Car Show that is simply untrue. It is rediculous to have two great events like Uncorked and the Kirkland Classic Car show on the same weekend, why not spread the wealth? Terri is in the process of trying to do just that, move the Car show to another weekend. There has always been a signature event in the summer on that weekend in Kirkland. Anybody remember Moss Bay Days? The Kirkland Art Center could no longer produce Summerfest to raise money to fund a staff position and decided to fund the position differently. That left a hole in the Kirkland event season and in stepped Boldhat to produce the summer festival for Kirkland. Contrary to popular belief the festival weekend never changed, the car show did. Uncorked hires local talent, Jodi Bardinelli was a big part of Uncorked over the last two years, managing the grilling demos featuring local and regional talent, Uncorked and the Kirkland Wednesday Market co market as they will this year. After Jodi passed away suddenly last December I was approached by Phil Megenhart to help with Uncorked in Jodi's absence. I could never do what she did but what I could do is get Kirkland restaurants to participate in the sampling demo in the pavilion. There are 13, THIRTEEN, Kirkland restaurants participating, the Culinary department from LWTC and 1 restaurant each from Redmond, Bothell and Bellevue. Pretty good turnout from Kirkland I think. I feel it is better to be a part of the solution instead of the problem. The staff at Uncorked always donates and particpates when asked. They donated a great basket for the 4th of July auction, were one of the first entries for the 4th of July parade and donated and attended a fundraiser dinner/auction in honor of Jodi Bardinelli. That is more than I can say for a lot of Kirkland businesses. By the way, Penny Sweet and Terri Fletcher worked hard on the above events too. So Fool me Once who do you think you are fooling? Get your facts straight and by the way, sign your name. We all did.

We fully appreciate all comments and concerns, anonymous or not, taking them to heart as we plan a better Kirkland Uncorked from year to year. Kirkland Uncorked is a regional event that truly allows Kirkland to shine as we welcome visitors from the Puget Sound, around the state and even the country. As a Kirkland business we are committed to the community and work in collaboration with the Chamber, KDA, the Kirkland Classic Car Show and Kirkland Art Center, among others, to continue to build and improve this award-winning regional festival. We could not have accomplished this successful event without the feedback and comments from community members and we always welcome anyone to contact us with their ideas and concerns.

With friends like this, who needs enemas.

I take exception with the style of the email (anonymous) and using my name without permisssion. I disagree that Larry Springer did anything wrong.

I DO NOT disagree that Megenhardt lied about “having spoken to the merchants” he blocks.
I DO NOT disagree that BoldHat Proiductions profits by tens of thousands of dollars of Kirkland tax revenue – whether Uncorked makes money or not.
I DO NOT disagree that they would rather take a couple hundred dollars from a 'trinket tents' (that have nothing to do with wine) than protect the Kirkland merchants who are suffering through a tough recession.

The crux of the hit piece is true – the object of their scorn was the major error. Larry Springer didn't fail to repay $50,000+ in loans – Phil Megenhardt did.

Larry Springer didn't call the police when he was politely asked if there was ANY way to not block Kirkland businesses with carnival followers and offered a drawing of an alternative layout – Phil Megenhardt did.

Now let me go change my boots – Phil Megenhardt's letter (above) was pretty tough to slog through and it smells to high heaven (but it does make excellent fertilizer).

Uncorked would be fine except it is way over priced and under poured. Myself with dozens of friends have refused to attend this venue because of those two reasons!
