Metropolitan Market Grand Opening Event (Photos)

The Kirkland Metropolitan Market celebrated its grand opening on Thursday with a ribbon cutting by CEO Terry Halverson before a crowd of shoppers which literally circled around the building and into the alley. Anxious shoppers started forming a line two hours before the 9 a.m. ceremony.

Carol DePaul greets both old friends and new customers at the grand opening of Metropolitan Market in Houghton.

It was all hands on deck as the doors of the 24 hour grocery store opened for the first time to greet customers with smiles, lots of cake, food samples and goodie bags for the first to shop at the new store.

The Metropolitan Market is located at Houghton Center, 10611 NE 68th, the site of the former Houghton Market. Several of the Houghton Market employees are now with the new store including Carol DePaul, who worked at the Houghton Market for 20 years. Visit metropolitan-market.com for details of the week-long celebration of Metropolitan Market’s newest store, and first on the Eastside.

I live on 106th about 1100 feet from the new metropolitan market. We have put up with construction noise 24/7 for the last three months. This is in violation of the city ordinace prohibiting construction activities between 7 pm and 7 am Monday through Friday, 7 pm to 9 am Saturday and no construction activities on Sundays or holidays. Ii am well aware of this as I am a contractor who does work in the city. I know that exceptions can be made upon application but only if the work is inside and no noise will be made that bothers nearby residents. We have heard the beeping of trucks and boom lifts backing up in the middle of the night for three months. Construction workers cars have been illegaly parked on the East side of 106th also during that time with no tickets being written.

Now the market is open and the traffic is horrible. We have a hard time just getting to our house and the road is now blocked with illegaly parked cars and cars in a que waiting to get into the parking lot.

I am happy the city is receiving additional revenue from the sales tax except food doesn't have sales tax. What prompted the city to allow them to add square footage to the existing building without requiring more parking? The only good news is that the police are now ticketing the many peole who continue to park illegally on 106th, even when the no parking signs are highly visable and the rest of the cars parked there have tickets on thier windshield. Makes you wonder about the intelligence of the Metropoliton market shopper.

If you have nothing nice to say, than keep your comments to yourself. Just be happy that this addition opens opporunity for more employment. If you can come up with a way to build a great structure without making noise than please teach us something.

    Best regards-

oh my gosh get over it. your city is actually getting something nice and so deal with it.

We were so disappointed in the market. So small and overpriced. We will have to continue going out to Central Market in Mill Creek where they have huge selections of everything and fair prices.

To Jamie and NewtoKirkland. How about we have all the employees of this megastore come park in front of your house?

I am not against progress as my livelihood depends on it. However, I feel the City Planners made a mistake by letting the shopping center add as much square footage as it did without any added parking. And, they did this in a residential neighborhood.

The rumor now is that PCC will be forced out of business and maybe MM will take over their parking places. I rather doubt that.

BTW, Jamie, would your comment to me be characterized as “nice”?

  • Tia

Did they really add square footage to the center? It doesn't look much different to me, apart from the fantastic facade renewal. Megastore may be a bit of a stretch. PCC should be OK. They are a niche grocer providing products and information that no one else does.
