Letter | Lake Washington Schools Foundation Annual Luncheon

By Byron Shutz

On April 28th we look forward to welcoming 500 community leaders of Kirkland, Redmond and Sammamish to celebrate the 5th Annual “Legacy for Learning” luncheon for the Lake Washington Schools Foundation. Hosted again by Juanita High School, the event raises funding to support academic excellence and success for all students in the Lake Washington School District.

All fifty-one Lake Washington school communities are represented at the event – the broad support is appreciated all the more each year. Generous sponsorship by Microsoft, Sodexo, HSBC, and LWYSA underwrites the luncheon, allowing every donation to benefit LWSD students. The Foundation funds grants to directly support the District, schools, classrooms, and students and teachers. Adapting the grants to meet the shifting challenges for our students offers opportunities for local support to make the most meaningful difference.

Superintendent Dr. Chip Kimball is the keynote speaker on the topic of “Future Ready in an Uncertain Future”. Guests are invited to arrive early by 11:00 to begin registration; the program will run from 11:30-12:. Additional information is available at www.lwsf.org.

We gratefully thank our generous community for their ongoing support in building a Foundation over the last five years in support of our future – the 24,000 students in the Lake Washington School District.  Onward we go together!

This is wonderful news! But too I am saddened.Yesterday I went to Best High School to drop off a donation for their yard sale. I was told it has to be postponed until May due to a lack of donations. I glanced in the direction of a pathetic stash of bags in a corner of the office. Now, I don’t have kids in the school system anymore and we never had a kid at Best, but the staff there sounded so supportive I was touched. I was told that many have a chance at college. Apparently they too have many positive news-worthy events but I’ve never seen any coverage from the media about this particular school – let’s face it, it’s one we’d like to forget. This city seems to have such a big heart for the homeless, poor and disadvantaged folk outside our community – but what about helping some of our own kids? Get involved, donate, mentor, or just keep an open mind … otherwise we might be seeing them again…in line at a Tent City in the future…
