Area chefs were challenged to create a delicious, nutritious dish that could be swallowed easily. Patients being treated for oral, head and neck cancers often struggle with dry mouth, difficulty swallowing and lost of taste because of the side effects of treatment. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 60,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with oral, head or neck cancer each year.
Participants include: Renatto Medranda, executive chef at the Westin Hotel in Bellevue; Shane Lynch, executive chef at Evergreen Hospital Medical Center; Sandra Watson, pastry chef at Trellis Restaurant at the Heathman Hotel in Kirkland; and Michael Lomardi, executive suites chef at Qwest Field in Seattle.
Guest speakers will be Kile Jackson, biomed engineer and musician and an oral cancer survivor; Jennifer Adler, nutritionist; otolaryngologist Jennifer Heydt, MD; and Mary Ellen Shands of Cancer Lifeline.
Evergreen Hospital and Cancer Lifeline sponsor a free oral, head and neck cancer support group that meets at 6:30 to 8 p.m. the second Wednesday of the month at Evergreen. The meetings are open to patients and their caregivers. For more information about the support group or other Cancer Lifeline programs at Evergreen Hospital, call Cancer Lifeline at 425-832-1297 or go to www.cancerlifeline.org.
