Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound needs YOU

Big-Brothers-Header

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, a donor-supported mentoring organization, is looking for volunteers for its one-to-one Community programs. Community-Based volunteers meet with their Little two to four times a month to do fun activities like seeing movies, shooting hoops, playing video games or visiting a zoo or museum.

Children in the Community-Based Mentoring program are kids who could greatly benefit from additional adult guidance. Boys and girls are referred to the program for many reasons, and many children come from homes where quality adult attention is limited by single-parenthood, many siblings or transitional housing, including foster care.

Whatever the circumstances, these children need an adult in their lives who is caring, consistent, knows how to listen and can be a good role model. Research shows our programs are working: compared to their non-mentored peers, Little Brothers and Little Sisters are less likely to use violence to solve problems, become more trusting of their parent or guardian, resist substance abuse and improved school attendance.

We are looking specifically for volunteers in Kirkland – we have had several kids waiting for quite some time for a mentor and would love to have one in their neighborhood. Please help us out – you can check out our website at www.bbbsps.org or e-mail Jesse Gilliam at gro.sbbbnull@maillig.essej for information on how to get involved.

I know of 2 little girls at Juanita Elementary that have been waiting for a Big Sister! I’ve had a Little Sister there for this school year and it’s an extremely rewarding program. It’s definitely worth the time commitment and I’d encourage anyone considering it to do it.
