New images of Hector’s and Waterfront Market

HectorsNew2

At the November 16 Moss Bay Neighborhood Association meeting, the architect of Hector’s and The Waterfront Market redevelopment on Lake Street gave a presentation on the project which included some new renderings.

“Rick Chesmore of Chesmore/Buck Architects was our next guest. Rick described the Hector’s Property remodel and expansion that is currently underway. Originally proposed as a five story office building, the location will now undergo a three phase project. The existing “Waterfront Market” building is being reconfigured. Existing businesses Thin Pan and Ben and Jerry’s will reopen in the new space, and new tenants will fill other spaces. HectorsNew1This phase of the project is underway and should be finished in March. Phase two will entail the existing Hector’s building, which will remain. The building just south, former home of World Wraps, will be demolished and a new building will replace it. A rooftop restaurant is also part of the project. This phase is scheduled to start in early 2010… Phase three of this project has not been designed yet, but could entail an office building behind Hector’s.”

I know there was massive opposition to a project on this location, and in my view, this time it actually seemed to work (fierece dialogue regarding a downtown project). We are getting something that is using what is already there (Market and Hector’s), hopefully nicely updated, and with some new and interesting space maybe even some cool tenants.

This is just a good example that we CAN do something with what we already have, instead of just tearing down everything and starting from scratch. The thing that can be referred to as “the soul of a building” can not just be created. It evolves over the years/decades and with a bit of care just gets better. Much prefer to frequent places like this, than the “run-of-the-mill” designed new spots (often dictated by the current trends).

Developer: Thank you for making good and sensible decisions this time!
