WSDOT is widening I-405 between 112th Ave. SE and SE 8th Street as a part of the I-405 widening project. For three weekends in August, I-405 southbound will be closed as crews remove the Wilburton Tunnel. Until recently, the tunnel allowed trains to pass overhead on what is the BNSF Corridor.
Southbound I-405 closure dates:
Your best bet is to avoid I-405 southbound at all costs. In fact, avoid all of the freeways if you can. And while you’re avoiding the freeways, stop an pick up a hands-free set for your mobile phone if you still have not done so. This Seattle Times story about ticketing for cellphone use just might convince you to do so.
WSDOT has produced two maps (PDFs) to show detour routes around the construction zone: The Wilburton Detour and It’s Crunch Time. These maps show suggested routes to avoid the construction zone. The local detour suggests exiting I-405 at SE 8th St. and then cruising along Bellevue Way SE. The regional detour is, well, a tad out of the way for a trip to Factoria, as illustrated in the graphic above. Yikes!
Over the past 20 years it seems like 405 has been torn up, rebuilt and then torn up every 10 years or so. Much of the work looks like it is just redone a short time later. My concern is congestion because I live on 405. I have no choice other than to get a new job.
I hope the Christine Gregoire vs. Dino Rossi race for governor will address transportation. We need some solutions and some relief from congestion. High gas prices are here to stay.
How much of our transportation money is spent on mass transit and how much on roads is what I want to know. I think too much is spent on too few people making life miserable for everyone else.
