Kirkland Council Appoints New Design Review Board Members

Landscape architects encouraged to apply for open position

Kirkland, WA – The Kirkland City Council has appointed Kirkland residents Erik Mott, Gregory Sparhawk and James Truhan to the City’s Design Review Board (DRB).  Six applicants were interviewed last night by the Council and current Design Review Board member Brian Berg.  The three who were selected are to complete the unexpired terms of members who resigned earlier this year.  Mott, who owns an architectural design firm, and Sparhawk, a licensed architect, were appointed to serve until March 31, 2011.  Truhan, a licensed architect working in the real estate design field, was appointed to serve until March 31, 2010.  A fourth position was not filled so that recruitment efforts to encourage persons with professional experience in landscape architecture could occur.  Qualified candidates should submit an application to the City by 5 p.m. on July 14, 2008.  Application forms are available on the City’s website at www.ci.kirkland.wa.us, by calling 425-587-3190 or at City Hall, 123 5th Avenue, Kirkland, WA.

The role of the DRB is to review and make decisions upon proposed development projects for compliance with City of Kirkland design guidelines in several of Kirkland’s business districts; and to evaluate existing design policies. The Board is composed of a majority of members who are professionals in the areas of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design/planning, or similar disciplines. DRB members are appointed by the City Council to serve four-year terms.  General applicant qualifications for the DRB include individuals with professional expertise in the areas of design or building and construction; or Kirkland residents with ability to read and understand architectural plans and have general knowledge of building and design.  DRB meetings are held the first and third Monday of each month at 7 p.m., Kirkland City Hall.  For agenda and meeting information, go to www.ci.kirkland.wa.us (Search: Design Review Board).
