Do you ever see much graffiti defacing Kirkland? Compared to other cities, I think we do a pretty good job of keeping this issue under control. I once thought we were just lucky here in Kirkland and that we didn’t have many graffiti criminals, oops, I mean graffiti artists. But then a while back I learned that Kirkland’s own Graffitimobile (I doubt that is the “official” name, but I kinda like it) is on the job. At the other end of  the 24-hour hotline are the nice people who scrub away all of what some communities call “art” from the face of our fair city. Fortunately, we in Kirkland have this hotrod speeding to the scene as soon as they get the call.

Citizens of other cities are not so lucky. According to TheNewsTribune.com, the City of Federal Way wants to stop graffiti by cracking down on property owners!

“The city wants to stiffen its code, requiring property owners or tenants to paint over graffiti within 48 hours after notice. Violators could be fined $100 for each day the graffiti remains. They also could face criminal penalties of up to $5,000 in fines or up to one year in jail. The city could clean up the graffiti if the owner refuses, said city attorney Pat Richardson.”

Help Kirkland to keep graffiti under control. If you see graffiti that needs removal, the city wants you to “report unsightly scrawls to the anti-graffiti hotline” at 425-587-3824. Or check out the City’s Anti-Graffiti website while you can. An article in the June 11 Kirkland Reporter said that the program could get trimmed from the city budget in the next two years.
