The City of Kirkland received twelve applications to fill the four vacant positions on the Design Review Board (DRB). The deadline for applications was June 6. At the conclusion of the interview process, those selected will join Carter Bagg, Brian Berg and Michael Stanger as members of the DRB. The City Council will choose those most qualified for the position.
The DRB is a linchpin for downtown development and plays a critical role in many pending projects including Kirkland Parkplace, Bank of America and the McLeod mixed-use projects.
The following individuals are to be commended for volunteering to join the DRB despite the high level of calamity that has surrounded the body of late.
Design Review Board Applicants
We would like to thank the above applicants for volunteering to serve on the Design Review Board. We owe a sincere debt of gratitude to all who serve the citizens of Kirkland as volunteers. Thank you.
Thank you to an anonymous reader who sent us this tip.
What are your views? What constructive advice would you give to the new DRB members? Will filling the empty DRB positions be a solution to Kirkland’s development stalemate or is the problem actually in the City code which the DRB attempts to follow? How much discretion should the DRB have? How can we avoid another round of appeals? Is there a common ground on these issues that can be found so that Kirkland advance in a manner that benefits citizens, property owners, shopkeepers and shoppers alike?

I hope that the City Council chooses those most qualified for the position, but I fear politics will creep into the matter. Were it the Planning Commission, I would be even more fearful.

Good luck to the DRB. They will have to work under a Council that is rudderless and shoulder deep in conflicts of interest. Did you see the Kirkland Courier article ‘Stalled appeals raise fairness issues, threats’? Damning indeed.

What constructive advice can I give to our new DRB members? Keep your heads down. Be professional. Follow the rules as written and don’t make room for appeals. Kirkland is going to die because it can’t get anything built anymore.
Where are the NIMBYs now? I’ll bet they applied for the DRB.

The real question is HOW can Kirkland avoid another round of appeals? If the fundamental issues are still the same, how can the outcome be any different? The city needs to change the rules for developing downtown so that everyone will know what the rules are and there wont be any more appeals. This is crazy that the city hasn’t changed yet. Why not?

The rules were thoroughly and thoughtfully developed and defined. Now stand up for them. No more appeals.

Is an Appeal not part of “the process”?

When is the new DRB scheduled to be complete? I have looked but I was not able to find it on the city’s web site.
